Here’s a refresher: Look for signs that your child’s ready for solids. He should be 4 to 6 months old and be able to sit up with some help, hold his head steady, and swallow food from a spoon. Stick to thin purees at first, and gradually build up to thicker ones. Infant cereal used to be the standard first food, but fruits and veggies like banana, avocado, and sweet potato are also great starters. Introduce one food at a time, and wait a few days in between so you can watch for any allergic reactions. And if your child turns up his nose at a certain food, try again another day—it can take up to 10 tries before he’ll try something new!
