Easing back into fitness as a new mom (or any kind of mum) can feel like such a daunting task – trust me, I’m right there with you! You are completely exhausted, your little one isn’t the best sleeper, there are piles and piles of laundry everywhere, but you also feel ready to start welcoming fitness into your life again (or for the first time!). Where do you even begin? Below are some simple tips for moms, new and old, wanting to jump start their fitness routine this new year. Even if you have other resolutions not exercise-related, I hope these 5 tips help you get things going!
#1 BE GENTLE WITH YOURSELF
So cliche, right? But so important! As a mother, we feel like we have to be superhuman, and accomplish it all. When in reality, some days that is simply just not possible. It can be so easy to get down on ourselves for not getting “this” or “that” done. I think it is important to remember that we are doing the best we can, and there will be days when maybe exercise doesn’t happen. Keep moving forward, and keep trying. Tomorrow is a new day!
#2 SET A 15 MINUTE GOAL
Start small! Start off with a goal to workout 3 days a week, for 15 minutes. If you end up having extra time to workout – awesome! If not, you still got in 15 minutes of time for yourself, and that’s great! Easing into working out is hard enough, but with a little one who constantly demands our attention, it’s even harder! Keep it simple and smart, and as you get used to your new schedule, you can up the time and the amount of workouts per week!
#3 CHANGE INTO YOUR WORKOUT CLOTHES FIRST THING
The day can get away from you so easily! Before you know it your in bed at night realizing you never got that workout in. Changing into workout clothes first thing in the morning helps prepare me, remind me of my goal to workout, and it stops me from putting it off. As soon as you find 15-45 minutes, get moving! You don’t have to talk yourself into to first getting ready (that’s often the hardest part). All you have to do is begin.
#4 INVOLVE YOUR KIDS
Let’s be honest, there are simply days that finding time to workout with little ones feels impossible. Load up the stroller and head outside on a walk, or to an indoor track instead! Not only can getting out of the house and moving help with your mood, but it’s a chance for you to also get in some exercise and feel good about yourself.
#5 REMIND YOURSELF OF YOUR “WHY”
Why are your working out? Try and look beyond the physical reasons, because it’s easy to lose motivation when goals are externally based. Is it for health reasons? To have more energy throughout the day? Is it because it makes you feel better? Makes you a better mother? Gives you some time just for yourself? Think about these reasons when you are struggling to find motivation. If you it is important to you, you will find a way to make it happen.
Good luck with your goals! Motherhood is the most important job in the world, and it’s so important to take care of yourself, so you can better take care of others! There are amazing days, and incredibly challenging days. Go easy on yourself, no matter what you are hoping to accomplish. You’ve got this, mama!
